Ethernet
A hardware standard used for networking. Often used to connect a projector to a remote PC using special software. Current ethernet standards include 10baseT and 100baseT ethernet.

Earth Ground
A conductor that will dissipate large electrical currents into the Earth.

ECL
Acronym for Emitter Coupled Logic.

Echo Canceler
An electronic circuit that attenuates or eliminates the echo effect on videoconference telephony links. Echo cancelers are largely replacing obsolete echo suppressors. Manufacturers include: Lectrosonics and Gentner.

Echo Suppression
Used to reduce annoying echoes in the audio portion of a videoconference. An echo suppressor is a voice-activated "on/off" switch that is connected to the four-wire side of a circuit. It silences all sound when it is on by temporarily deadening the communication link in one direction. Unfortunately, not only the echo is stopped but also the remote end's new speech, which results in clipping.

EDID
Acronym for  Extended Display Interface Data.

EDTV
Acronym for Enhanced Definition Television.

EGA
Acronym for Enhanced Graphics Adapter.

Electronic Mail (E-Mail)
A system for transmitting information or messages using an electronic communications network.

Electro Luminescent Display
Flat screen technology non-LCD

Electron Guns
The device in the CRT that produces the electron beam that is attracted to the phosphors on the face of the CRT; this activates the phosphors thus causing them to emit red, green, or blue light and create visual images on the CRT.

EMI
Electro Magnetic Interference.

Emitter Coupled Logic
ECL signals are high speed digital logic and are mostly found in high resolution CAD/CAM computers and are usually monochrome or black and white. ECL operates in two level states and switches between these states in small increments of time. Bits are; Next/Most/Least Significant. Conversion to analog is required for proper interfacing.

EMOTIA™
The name of an Extron scan converter.

Encoder
A device that superimposes electronic signal information on other electronic signals. Encodes RGBS to form NTSC format.

Enhanced Definition Television
A television system featuring advanced encoding and transmission methods. Not as sophisticated as HDTV (high definition television), this first generation is compatible with existing TV sets and transmission methods.

Enhancement
Adding to the quality of the basic image with special effects, gradations, interpolations, logos, etc. Used to reinforce the message and increase visual interest.

Enhanced Graphics Adapter
Introduced by IBM in 1984, the EGA card may be configured with dip switch settings to provide an MDA or CGA output signal. Signal type is TTL, non-interlaced with a Pixel Line resolution of 640 x 350 and a color palette of 16/64. EGA horizontal scan frequency is 21.8 kHz or 15.75 kHz in CGA mode. Vertical frequency is 60 Hz. The EGA card outputs to a 9 pin 'D' type connector.

Environment
A particular computer system's configuration, which sets the standards for the application programs that can be used on it.

EPROM
Acronym for Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory.

Equalizing Pulses
Pulses that cause the vertical deflection to start at the same time in each interval, and also keep the horizontal sweep circuits in step during the portions of the vertical blanking interval immediately preceding and following the vertical sync pulse.

Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory
An IC chip which is capable of storing software instructions or data and retains that information when power is removed. The information can be erased by exposing it into an electrical charge.

Ergonomics
The science of designing machines, tools and computers so that people find them easy and comfortable to use.

Ethernet
Ethernet is a type of network cabling and signalling specifications (OSI Model layers 1 [physical] and 2 [data link]) originally developed by Xerox in the late 1970. In 1980, Digital Equipment Corp. (DEC), Intel and Xerox (the origin of the term DIX, as in DEC/Intel/Xerox) began joint promotion of this baseband, CSMA/CD computer communications network over coaxial cabling, and published the "Blue Book Standard" for Ethernet Version 1. This standard was later enhanced, and in 1985 Ethernet II was released. The IEEE's (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers') Project 802 then (after considerable debate) used Ethernet Version 2 as the basis for the 802.3 CSMA/CD network standard. The IEEE 802.3 standard is generally interchangeable with Ethernet II, with the greatest difference being the construction of the network packet header. http://wwwhost.ots.utexas.edu/ethernet/enet-faqs/ethernet-faq.

  •   10BASE-T      Standard Ethernet supporting 10Mbps connections.
  • 100Base-T      Fast Ethernet supporting 100 Mbps.
  • 100BASE-T4    Specification for 100Mbps transmissions on Category 3, Category 4 or Category 5 UTP cables up to 100 meters using 2 pairs in the wire bundles.
  • 100BASE-TX    Specification for 100Mbps transmission on Category 5 UTP cables and Type 1 STP cable at a distance up to 100 meters using 2 pairs in the wire bundles.
  • 100BASE-FX    Specification for 100Mbps transmissions 62.5/125 micron multimode fiber cable at distances up to 412 meters using 2 strands of multimode fiber.

Ethernet Backbone
Physical UTP wiring or fiber that comprises the LAN cabling.

Expansion Slots
Slots, or spaces, inside a cabinet that are used to connect additional circuit boards (cards).

Extended Display Interface Data
A record for a display device like a projector or monitor including these fields:

  • Manufacturers ID
  • Serial ID
  • Product Version
  • Product ID
  • Product Capability - resolutions, color coordinates, white point, sync types and drive levels.
(additional   fields - more modes, resolutions, serial number, or resolution sweet spots).

Extended Graphics Array card
IBM's graphics standard that includes VGA and extended resolutions up to 1024 x 768, interlaced; 35 kHz. This card has a 15-pin HD connector.

ExtroNews
A newsletter format publication produced by Extron Electronics that educates its readers about the AV/Communications industry trends, new products and new products announced by Extron.
